Johnathan Matlock is Co-Founder and General Partner at Empirical Ventures, a pre-seed and seed investor focused on deep science startups in the UK, targeting a £10M fund and backed by a £5 million commitment from British Business Investments' Regional Angels Programme. He previously served as an Advisory Board Member at Elbow Beach Capital. With a PhD in Organic Chemistry and 15 years at the intersection of science, entrepreneurship, and capital, he helps build and scale deep science companies. He has extensive experience as both a scientist and operator, having been part of the core scientific team at University of Bristol spinout Ziylo Ltd, which was acquired by Novo Nordisk in a deal potentially worth over $800 million after just 18 months, where he met Empirical Ventures co-founder Dr. Ben Miles. He also co-founded Science Angel Syndicate. He holds board roles at QV Bioelectronics and cheMastery.
